There does seem to be some evidence online for this - including the perhaps more convincing assertion that Inimicus Animo is Latin for 'Enemy of the spirit'. The devil having cloven hooves wuold have no feeling in his toes, so the rhyme was a way of detecting Old Nick from an innocent.
